Download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
If you are an Office 2000, Office XP or Office 2003 user, you must be having problems in opening files created using Office 2007. Actually Office 2007 uses a new file format which can't be recognized by earlier Office versions.
Having long preferred the 2003 version of Microsoft Office, the availability of Office 2007 on XP has in no swayed me to make the change. For some, simplicity comes in the form of large abstruse buttons. For others, it is in the form of logical drop down menus.
But viewing Office 2007 files by emailing them to yourself is not a solution. It’s a workaround. Luckily, Microsoft has refrained from forcing us to make the change through the release of the Microsoft Compatibility Pack.
For example, by installing the Compatibility Pack after you install the Word Viewer, you can view documents that are saved in the following new document formats:
- Word Document (.docx)
- Word Macro-Enabled Document (.docm)
As the controversies kept piling up, the solution came with the release of Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats. This software was not considered to be a fix or a patch, because it was never included in the Microsoft Automatic Updates.

You can download it using following link:
- On the Start menu, (point to Settings) and then click on Control Panel.
- Click on Add or Remove Programs link (depend to the Windows version you use)
- In the list of currently installed programs, select Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system and then click Remove button.
- Click Yes to confirm removal of the program. It will take some time to complete.
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats also supports the Microsoft Office Word / Excel / PowerPoint Viewer 2003 software. It does not require users to restart their computers and you can start working with DOCX, PPTX or XLSX files right away. This software is not great on itself. Without the problems occurred within the process and all the nerves reported MIA, it wouldn't have been developed. It really gets the essence out of the saying: “Better late than never.”
