Update Management Strategies

Security Guidance for Update Management provides additional information about Microsoft’s best-practice recommendations for applying security updates.

Obtaining Other Security Updates

Second, Dell updates factory software only every quarter (in some rare exceptions, a patch must be installed on an emergency basis, such as a zero-day exploit the exposes both customers and our factory) to keep the changes manageable for our customers. This means there will be more recent security patches we will not have factory-installed, so again, run Windows Update.

This document will be updated quarterly to include the latest set of patches we factory install.

Microsoft’s own Technet forum post on this service pack includes a number of cautionary tales from users who have installed this update. Also, the SANS Internet Storm Center is keeping a running tally of issues and conflicts that users have reported. For example, some users are reporting that certain types of third party firewalls and disk encryption software may be affected by the service pack. If you decide to proceed with this service pack, please consider having a look at these two resources.

See How Do I Install Windows Updates? if you're new to this or need some help.

You also have the option of manually installing these security updates, each of which is available via the link corresponding to your version of Windows or Microsoft software within the individual Bulletin ID pages in the February MSBS.

Any non-security updates for Windows are listed on Microsoft's New Non-Security Content for 2016 page. You can usually find links to any non-security Microsoft Office updates on the Microsoft Office Updates blog.

Note: Most of these downloads come in 32-bit or 64-bit versions. See Do I Have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? if you're not sure which downloads to choose.

  1. Restart your computer to enable the changes.

What to do if the installation ends with an error

Alternatively, you may download all patches released for all versions of Windows by downloading security ISO images that Microsoft makes available, directly from Microsoft's Download Center where they are made available individually, or by using third-party tools.
